In the last two weeks, they have walked up to Dyer Drug and McWhorters Variety store. While in Dyers, some looked at the beautiful Mothers day gifts on display, while others enjoyed the “slush puppies”. While tasting her slushy, Mary Dean Troxell stated, “I haven’t had one of these slushy’s in years; oh, this tastes so good!” In the Variety store, Elders looked at the colorful and bright displays of Memorial Day flowers, and others just enjoyed browsing and socializing. Upon asking Mintford Kennedy what his favorite thing was about going to McWhorters Variety store he stated, “I got the most pleasure when I gave that little Cross boy (son of Brad & Stacey Cross) some money so he could buy himself a John Deere tractor toy. That did more for me than anything else could today!”

Following a ankle fracture, Nina came to our facility for PT & OT until she was able to return home on her own safely.  Happily today she got to go back home!   We will miss her terribly!

It was a tight race, with a photo finish…And the Winner of the Kentucky Derby ”Run for the Roses” was Maggie Warriner with “Ranger”.  Congratulations to everyone!!

Elders donated and planted a Kwanzan Japanese Flowering Cherry tree and a Red Maple tree at Mountain View Park (the local community park). They have been discussing ways of how they can give back to the community and this was one of their ideas. Dorothy Duvall stated, “Everyone that comes to the park will get pleasure from these trees that we planted today!”

Our “Green Thumb Club” has been planting a mix of bright flowers in the front yard. Elders enjoyed planting an array of flowers in their  two new planter boxes that Steve Hardin,Plant Director, made for them which are wheelchair accessible, thanks to the idea by Elder Ms. Dorothy Duvall. Ms. Dorothy loves to plant flowers at the Home every year. She had help planting the flowers from Elders, Ms. Phyllis and Ms. Florence Reitz, and staff, Kristen McGaw, Activity Assistant; Regina Abbott, OT; Vickie Basham, OT; and Michelle Shelton, QOL Director.

Each had been studying up to a week, some even daily, for the contest. The competition lasted about 2 hours before we could award trophies to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. 1st place was awarded to Ms. Grace Pearcy, 2nd place went to Ms. Mary Dean Troxell, and 3rd place was awarded to Mr. Jimmie Thrasher. Congratulations to all Elders for competiting in the Spelling Bee; everyone is a Winner!!

The record was previously held by the Christopher Reeve Foundation, with 193 wheelchairs. Local radio station WXRQ was on hand broadcasting live from the parade, and WSMV-TV (channel 4) featured the event on its six o’clock newscast. The Columbia Daily Herald also published a front-page article.
